Today (02/04/16) we took a trip to San Francisco on train.
We met on the West Dublin/Pleasanton BART station at 9 o’clock.
The journey wasn’t really long. Only appr. 30 minutes.
But at the time when we arrived San Francisco we lost Kevin and Mrs. Urbaniak. So we had to wait at the train station.
It wasn’t really bad. It was just a bit funny.
After the little incident we went to the City Collegeof San Francisco.
A man and a woman talked about the College and explained some interesting things.
Later we were on the roof and had a really nice view of SF.
Then it was lunchtime and we could go and eat in little groups of a four.
After that we went to the Asian Art Museum.
We didn’t have a guided tour.
So we had two hours time to walk around, take pictures and talk.
In my opinion it was really nice.
There were amazing pieces of art but also some funny and unreal sculptures.
But it was my first art museum that I’ve seen for more than 20 minutes (like MoMA in NYC).
At 5:00 pm we was back in Pleasanton.
At the end I can say it was a nice day that I will never forget because of those guys.
Today (2. February 2016) we met on a parking lot on 7:45am to get ready for the 2 and a half hour ride to Monterey Bay that started at 8 o’clock. We finally arrived at 10:30 and we were really happy to get out of the car. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful nature and the scenic view you had while watching the sea from the cliffs. The only bad thing I noticed was the rainy and cloudy weather because everything was muddy. At 10:55 we started a guided tour which basically meant a lot of walking. The guide told us to not touch any plants because one of them the poison oak is very poisonous. At first we went trough the coastal scrub which had many different small plants like bushes. After that we went into an area were only trees grow because there taking the water and the sunlight away from the little plants. Some of those trees like the moderate Zypress are pretty rare. The guide told us that there are many animals living in that area. Some of them are deer, mountain lions, coyotes and the dusky footed wood rat. After that we came to a cliff area were we could see tight pools. At that place the guide told us that the cliffs in this area exist since 80 million years. The best thing about the cliffs were the trees that grew on stone. After that we got to a place where we could see the so called Sea lion rock. Its called Sea lion rock because usually there many sea lions sitting on it. At the same place we saw otters at 11:50. A thing that I noticed while I was looking around was that many trees didn’t have leaves on them. At 12:05 our tour around Monterey bay ended. After the tour we went to an pier where we had 1 and an half hour of free time to grab some food and get some souvenirs. We left the pier at 3pm and arrived in Pleasanton at 5:30. Thatwas the end of our trip so everybody got home. In the end I would say that the trip was very interesting and it was great fun. Kevin Here are some pictures from Montorey bay:
We all awaked early in the morning in the centre of Manhattan. The tributes of Jet leg and the, let’s call them interesting and/or historic, rooms of hotel were written all over our faces. We started our first day in New York with American breakfast in a Deli near the hotel.
After we finished French toast, grilled sandwiches and pancakes we visited Times Square.
The next stop was in Central Park to take photos of American squirrels and to feed them with potato crisps.
After that we walked through the Upper Eastside. The sentence of the day: „Also auf den Fotos sah das immer schöner aus.“(Sarah Dorant)
On our way back to the hotel we visited the Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA) and got the great chance to see among others Picassos or Van Goghs.
All in all it was a nice and sunny day although it was very cold.
Finally I am proud to tell that we managed to walk about 29km this day.
We were really lucky to catch the flight to San Francisco because a blizzard in Washington stopped many flights from flying. On the flight we had a really good view of the mountains. In addition the welcome was really great and we met our host families and the students. After that we drove to our home where we will stay for 3 weeks. In the end it was a great day.
Today was our first whole day in Washington DC. First we had some breakfast which we got from the Wholefood Market near our hotel. After that we went to the Capitol. On our walk we could already see the White House. In the Capitol we could see two senators speaking in front of an almost empty hall. After that a woman showed us the building and its characteristics.
Then we went back to the White House and looked at some monuments that were built for the victims of the Vietnam war and World War II. We also saw the big Lincoln memorial.
Then we went back to our hotel and got some dinner from the Wholefood Market.
On the 25th of January the whole group took the BART to go to San Francisco. After that we walked to the Alcatraz Ferry. The weather was beautiful. The view from the ferry was awesome. We could see the Golden Gate Bridge and the Alcatraz island. On the island we got an introduction which also included something about the history of the island. After that we split into small groups. I think the most groups started with the east path because the view was wonderful. We saw the skyline of San Francisco and the San Francisco- Oakland Bay Bridge. The path ended at the Cell house. We Got some audio guides. The tour was very interesting and everything was explained well. I think the fascinating stories about the escapes had been the best. In order to go to the mainland we went back by the ferry. Our next step was to go to Pier 39. We had lunch there and saw the seals of Pier 39. In the afternoon we went to the cable car station and rode with it along the steep roads of San Francisco. After that we used the BART to get back to Pleasanton and most of the students went to Martina’s typical American birthday party. At the party we ate pizza, cupcakes and ice cream and watched a film.
Today we met use at 8’o clock am for breakfast. We went to the restaurant were we every morning eat breakfast. After that we went back to the hotel. There we should brush our teeth and get ready for the day. We all went shopping in groups of more than 2 people. 2:30 pm everyone had to be back in the hotel and knocked on the door of Frau Urbaniak and Herr Bischoff room. Than we had time until 4’o clock pm. At this time we watched TV, read a book or slept. Than 10 after 4 we started our trip. We want to do a city tour by bus. But we were not getting one so we walked a hour around but without success and it were so COLD.! So than Herr Bischoff got insight and we all went to a burger restaurant „smash burger“. There we had such a good burger, thumbs up! After that we went back and fell asleep.
Today we walked to the Empire State Building. The weather was sonny and not cloudy. We saw the Empire State Building very early because it is really high. We went to the top by elevator. The view was so GREAT. I hoped that the time wouldn’t end We saw the skyline of New York, Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and our hotel and other buildings or skyscrapers. You can go to the 102nd level but you need a special ticket. The most of us took photos and after that they went downstairs to the shop. After a little shopvisit we went out of the Empire State Building. After the visit we walked to the pier. The bad thing was that the pier was closed. So we went to lunch. We ate all something and after the lunch we met to go on the Brooklyn Bridge. The Bridge was very beautiful and big. We walked a little way over the bridge. The view was very nice. The most of us liked to go home and we walked home.
This was our second day
Today we woke up early in the morning. At 9:30 am we went to Ground Zero by Metro. The weather was wet, rainy and foggy. So most time we didn‘t see the highest points of the skysrapers. At Ground Zero were waterfalls, where the buildings were destroyed. There is a museum too, but it will open in spring time. After Ground Zero we walked to the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry was free and we drove to Staten Island . By the way we saw Elis Island and the Statue of Liberty . The bad thing was that the weather was very foggy!!! After the visit in Staten Island we drove back. Our last point was the Museum of Modern Art. It was free too. At the Museum we saw lots of art, for example painting art, photographic art, statue art,…. It was very interesting. The museum closed 5:30 pm. We drove back by metro and ate something to dinner.
It was again an interesting day.
